Assuming that the surnames might have come from a former slaveholder, you might want to check, among other things, "Virginia Slave Births Index, 1853-1865," Volume 1, published by Heritage Books. This volume covers slave births arranged by surname of owner and covering surnames beginning with the letters A, B and C. The other volumes are to follow this year (2007). There are a lot of Chandlers, Collinses and Costins.
