Date: 16 Feb 2003 Time: 17:53:59 I'm doing research on African American lighthouse keepers and came across Robert Darnell of Alexandria, VA. He's listed as a Civil War veteran. Seems he may have been a lighthouse keeper at Lower Cedar Point Lighthouse in Maryland in 1870. I'm waiting on his pension records to track him. Is anyone aware of him? I doubt if he's buried in Freedman's. Can someone point me to sources? I would appreciate any help. Thanks! |

Date: 26 Feb 2003 Time: 13:15:04 Pension records would be a good place to start. The National Archives has records of the Lighthouse Sevice, including personnel records. They generally would not tell much about an individual, but with research, you could generally come up when they were appointed and replaced and their pay. There could be extant letters or reports from them. The records are not, however, easily accessible, as they are textual and not microfilm, and generally at the main Archives location in Washington. They are not, of course, arranged to suit genealogists. One really has to be able to research in person. |
