As I have done for the past two years, I am searching the web for Freedmen information. Running into your web site is a Blessing. Your organizations work in preserving cemeteries where Freedmen are resting until the big home coming is great. I resently found out about a Freedmen Cemetery in Muskogee, Oklahoma (http://www.african-nativeamerican.com/old_agency.htm).After reviewing this web site please let me know what steps I can take to ensure that this Freedmen Cemetery doesn't just fade away like so many others. I presently live in El Paso, Texas. I travel to my home state twice a year. My next trip home I plan on conducting extensive research on the cemetery and the Freedmen resting there. My Goal is to have the Cemetery recognized as a State and Federal Land Mark. I realize it will take time, hard work and alot of help to make it happen. I have make a committment not only to myself, but to those resting in this cemetery. Thank you in advance for your help in this project.

Has anyone, other than myself noticed the deplorable condition of Black cemeteries throughout the Country, particularly in the Southeastern Cities? I realize part of the blame must rest with the affected citizenry. However the disrespect shown these properties by locating junk yards and used car lots adjacent to Black Cemeteries are not conducive to good relationship. Just Ponder the obvious Contrast.
